Shock Wave Therapy for Effective Pain Relief and Healing
Shockwave treatment used for pain relief is a relatively new therapy in Canada. It was developed in Europe beginning in the 1960’s and introduced here in the 1990’s. The therapy uses sound waves directed at specific areas of the body to induce healing and relieve pain.
It is unclear as to how it works exactly, but testing and experimentation has proven that it can be very effective in treating certain conditions such as inflamed tendons (tendonitis), in stimulating pain relief, and in soft tissue regeneration.
The theory is that it stimulates the healing process by increasing the blood flow to affected areas, which accelerates healing and often results in relatively speedy relief from pain. It also helps heal chronic inflammation, stimulates collagen, which connects and supports tissue, and also breaks up calcium deposits.
This technology is well known as a therapy that has been used successfully to treat kidney stones by directing sound waves at the stones to destroy them.
Specific Conditions are Relieved by Shockwave Treatment
Many weekend athletes will be happy to know that shockwave treatment is an effective therapy for sports injuries, and it is also useful for work related injuries or problems that occur to all of us in our everyday lives. Some of the problems that respond well to this therapy are:
- Hamstring injuries
- Plantar Fasciitis (an inflammation of the connective tissue on the sole of the foot)
- Achilles Tendon Pain
- Epicondylitis (tennis or golfer’s elbow)
- Patellar Tendonitis (jumper’s knee – tearing of the tendons connecting to the knee bone)
- Painful shoulder
- Back Pain
- Heel spur pain
- Shin splints and a host of other applications that have been, and continue to be, tested and proven effective
Besides comparatively quick pain relief, accelerated tissue regeneration, and other benefits, shockwave treatment is an alternative treatment that is often used successfully to avoid having to undergo surgery.
You Might Not be a Candidate for Shockwave Treatment
You should only consider receiving this treatment from competent and thoroughly trained practitioners. Some patients are advised not to accept this treatment at all or, in some cases, only after careful consideration. One of our chiropractors can help you make an informed decision about whether or not this treatment is suitable for your condition.
There are instances when shockwave treatment is not acceptable, such as for:
- pregnant women
- people with bleeding disorders because, under some conditions, the sound waves are known to cause bleeding in bone tissues
- people taking certain blood thinners and medications affecting the thinning or clotting of blood for the same reason
- people with any condition for which results-based testing has not been completed
At the Vancouver Spine Care Centre, we invite you to discuss the benefits of shockwave treatment for your condition.
